Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 10: ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (CIARI), South Andaman conducted a three-day training programme sponsored by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad on “Post-Harvest Processing and Value Addition in Fishes” from 8th to 10th December 2025 at KVK, South Andaman.
The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, Sri Vijaya Puram. In his inaugural address, Dr. Ramakrishna motivated the participants to take up entrepreneurial activities in the fisheries sector and generate employment not only for themselves but also for others in their community. Dr. Pooja Kapoor, SMS (Home Science) briefed the participants on post-harvest losses, fish value chains, and the economic benefits of fish processing. Dr. Zachariah George, SMS (Animal Science) highlighted hygienic handling practices and quality control measures in fish processing.
Dr. Y. Ramakrishna also discussed various types of packaging and emphasized the importance of proper labelling and sealing. Mr. Mohit, SMS, (Plant protection) spoke about common diseases in fishes, while Ms. Sushma, SMS (Horticulture) elaborated on the present scenario of start-ups in the fisheries sector in India. A hands-on training session was conducted by Dr. Pooja Kapoor on the preparation of various value-added fish products such as dried fish using tray dryers, fish pickle, prawn podi, etc. The trainees were also exposed to different types of packaging materials suitable for marketing the finished products.
A total of 38 women participants from different Panchayat actively participated and benefitted from the training programme.
The programme was conducted under the overall guidance and supervision of Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, and Dr. Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram.
