CPI (M) State Committee Demands Consultation with Political Parties on Great Nicobar Island (GNI) Projects

Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 30: Meetings of CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Secretariat and State Organising Committee were held at Rangat, Middle Andaman on 25th January 2026 under the chairmanship of Nikunjo Biswas.  CPI (M) Polit Bureau Member K. Balakrishnan attended the meeting. D. Ayyappan, Secretary, A & N State Organising Committee presented report on the activities of the Party since last SOC meeting held in October, 2026.

At the call given by the CPI (M) Central Committee, the SOC meeting decided to undertake a week-long campaign against dilution of Rural Employment Guarantee Act.  All Party leaders and cadre will visit the houses of the job-card holders and agriculture workers who were involved in the MGNREGA work. Campaign will start on 30th January, 2026 (Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) and to continue till 5th February, 2026.

The meeting expressed concern over the fact that communal forces are trying to divide the islanders on the basis of religion. The party has decided to intensify its campaign among the people highlighting the dangers of communal forces.

The Party also observed with grave concern the autocratic manner in which the Great Nicobar Project is being implemented despite strong opposition from Nicobari tribals, people of Great Nicobar and environmentalists all over the country in the wake of the reports of large scale cutting of trees and displacement of people. No consultation with political parties or elected representatives in the Panchayat-raj institutions were conducted over the Project by the Government of India or A & N Administration. The SOC meeting adopted a resolution on this issue.

The SOC meeting decided to extend full support to the All India General Strike of central trade unions on 12th February, 2026.

The SOC meeting also decided to support the demand made by the All India Kisan Sabha to grant absolute ownership right to the landholders in the islands instead of tenants.
