
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 1: As part of the nationwide month-long “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” being conducted across the country from 1st to 30th June, 2026, the Department of Agriculture, A&N Administration in association with Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), South Andaman, has commenced a series of awareness and demonstration programmes across the Islands.
The objective of the campaign is to create awareness among farmers on the balanced use of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs based on soil testing, train and enhance farmers’ capacity in the use of balanced fertilizers, green manure and organic/biological products, promote natural farming through awareness programmes, training and field demonstrations and improve soil health by organizing demonstrations on farmers’ fields on the use of green manure, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), and the correct application of agricultural inputs.
In continuation of this initiative, two programme under the campaign was organized today at Collinpur and Namunaghar Village, South Andaman, wherein farmers were sensitized on the importance of balanced and judicious use of fertilizers, soil health management, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), soil sample collection, weather-based crop advisories and water conservation practices.
During the programme, technical experts highlighted the adverse effects of indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and emphasized the need for nutrient application based on soil test recommendations.
Farmers were further apprised of various Government schemes including PM-KISAN, Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). The participants were encouraged to adopt scientific and climate-resilient farming practices for improving productivity while conserving natural resources.
The programme witnessed the participation of farmers, Farmer Friends, ATMA functionaries, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions. Similar programmes, demonstrations and awareness campaigns will be conducted throughout the month across all Blocks of Andaman & Nicobar Islands under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan.
