Campbell Bay, Aug. 11: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) organised and conducted an awareness programme on preventive steps for avoiding dog bites and dog bite management at Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Campbell Bay on Aug. 7. The programme was organised with the objective of educating school students and teachers about safe behaviour around dogs, prevention of dog bite incidents, and the importance of prompt action in case of animal bites. A total of 58 students of Class XI and 6 teachers participated in the session.
During the awareness programme, the participants were educated on understanding dog behaviour and warning signs, dos and don’ts to be followed while encountering dogs, and the immediate steps to be taken in the event of a dog bite. Special emphasis was laid on avoiding provocation of dogs, maintaining a safe distance from unfamiliar animals, thoroughly washing the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, informing elders or teachers immediately, and seeking prompt medical attention along with Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) without delay.
The session was interactive and the students actively engaged by asking relevant questions and clarifying their doubts. The programme also highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour towards animals and the role of the community in effective stray dog management.
The Department of AH&VS continues to conduct such awareness programmes in schools across the Islands to promote public health, responsible behaviour towards animals, and effective prevention of dog bites and rabies among young students and the local community.
