Mayabunder, April 12: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration yesterday distributed 465 poultry birds to 19 beneficiaries from Mohanpur village, Lataw, and Devpur under the jurisdiction of Veterinary Hospital, Webi.
This distribution is part of the Department’s ongoing Rotational Distribution Programme aimed at strengthening backyard poultry farming, generating sustainable additional income for rural households, and improving nutritional security in remote areas of the islands. The beneficiaries received quality poultry birds along with essential technical guidance on scientific rearing, feeding, health management, and biosecurity practices to ensure high survival rates and better productivity.
The initiative is expected to significantly benefit small and marginal farmers by providing them with a low-investment, high-return livelihood option. Backyard poultry not only supplements household income but also ensures a regular supply of nutritious eggs and meat for family consumption.
The Department remains committed to expanding such distribution drives across the islands, empowering more farmers, especially in rural and tribal areas, through regular supply of quality chicks and continuous technical support.
