A&N Administration Initiates Steps to Strengthen Awareness about Nation’s Freedom Struggle and Ideals of Veer Savarkar Among School Children

Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 21: In pursuance of the guidance and suggestions given by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah during the cultural programme held at Sri Vijaya Puram on 12th December, 2025, commemorating the 115th anniversary of the poem “Sagar Pran Talmalala” composed by Veer Savarkar Ji, the A&N Administration has initiated steps to strengthen awareness among children and youth about the nation’s freedom struggle and the ideals of Veer Savarkar Ji.

In this regard, the Art & Culture Department, A&N Administration has urged all educational institutions to facilitate visits of students to the National Memorial, Cellular Jail. These visits are designed to instill a deep sense of patriotism and provide firsthand exposure to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters who were incarcerated in the Cellular Jail. Students of schools, colleges and other educational institutions are permitted to visit the Cellular Jail free of cost.

It is worth mentioning that student participation in educational visits to the National Memorial Cellular Jail has grown more than threefold within a year, rising from 51 schools with 3,082 students in 2024 to 144 schools from across the A&N Islands with 9,395 students in 2025. Educational institutions may contact the Office of the Art & Culture Deptt for facilitating Cellular Jail visit of students in person or mail to artand.culture@and.nic.in. 

Meanwhile, to further inspire the younger generation, the Administration is planning awareness-oriented academic activities that highlight the life, works, and contributions of Veer Savarkar Ji. These initiatives include slogan competitions at the school level and book review programmes at the college and higher education level; all aimed at inculcating his ideals and fostering a spirit of national pride. Through these measures, the Art & Culture Department, A&N Administration reaffirms its commitment to nurturing historical awareness and cultural heritage; also ensuring that the legacy of Veer Savarkar Ji continues to inspire future generations.
