
Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 1: The Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) observed World AIDS Day 2025 today, with a large-scale awareness rally, drawing enthusiastic participation from school and college students. The event aimed to promote awareness on HIV & AIDS and reaffirm commitments toward eliminating stigma and discrimination.
Ms. Richa, Secretary (Health), A&N Administration, graced the occasion as chief guest and flagged off the rally from Netaji Stadium. Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, A&N Administration was the guest of honour. The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director, ANACS.
More than 600 students from 20 schools and 10 colleges, accompanied by Nodal teachers and faculty members, took part in the event. The day began with registration and distribution of T-shirts, caps, and placards with awareness messages. Students also formed a symbolic Red Ribbon along with HIV on the ground, demonstrating solidarity with people living with HIV & AIDS.
Addressing the gathering, Secretary (Health) Ms. Richa emphasized the importance of creating an informed and compassionate society. “HIV & AIDS is not a crime. It is not a curse. It is a medical condition that can be managed with timely testing, proper treatment, and support. We must work collectively to eliminate myths and misconceptions,” she said.
World AIDS Day has been observed globally every year since 1988 to raise awareness about the impact of HIV & AIDS, celebrate progress in treatment and prevention, and promote equality and dignity for those affected. The theme for 2025 is “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response”. The theme emphasizes on transforming current approach, strengthen our efforts, and to move together toward the vision of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The rally started from Netaji Stadium and passed through Clock Tower, Model School, Bengali Club, and returned along the same route, finally concluding at the National Memorial Cellular Jail.
