
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 29: As part of the observance of Drugs Awareness Month–2026 and the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (26th June 2026), the Andaman & Nicobar Police, through the Anti-Narcotics Police Station, organized a series of awareness programmes, public outreach activities and enforcement initiatives across the Islands to spread awareness on the ill effects of drug abuse and promote the vision of a Drug-Free Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
During the month of June 2026, the Anti-Narcotics Police Station conducted 18 anti-drug awareness programmes, benefiting approximately 980 participants, including students, teachers, Government officials, sanitary workers, transport staff, Port Management Board officials, forest personnel, prisoners, auto drivers and members of the general public. Awareness programmes were organized at Garacharma Sanitary Office, Akash Institute, Forest Training Institute, Balika Niketan, coaching centres, PMB Office, Shadipur Community Hall, District Jail Prothrapur, ANIIMS, Directorate of Transport & STS Office, Love Children Home, Directorate of Health Services, Aberdeen Bazaar Auto Stand, Flag Point, SAI Hostel and other locations across Sri Vijaya Puram and South Andaman.
The participants were sensitized about the harmful effects of drug abuse, provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the importance of early intervention, counselling, rehabilitation and the role of community participation in preventing drug trafficking. Information regarding the MANAS Helpline (1933) and the 24×7 Anti-Drug Helpline (9531856080) was widely disseminated during all programmes.As part of the awareness campaign, multilingual pamphlets, banners and QR code-based awareness materials promoting the MANAS Helpline (1933) and Anti-Drug Helpline (9531856080) were displayed at schools, colleges, Government offices, hotels, bus stands, auto stands, fish landing centres and other prominent public places. Awareness videos promoting both helplines are also being screened in cinema halls across Sri Vijaya Puram to encourage greater public participation in reporting drug-related activities.
On 19.06.2026, a Drawing and Poster-Making Competition was organized for the students attending the UDAAN Summer Camp at Police Line, Sri Vijaya Puram. Fifty (50) students enthusiastically participated in the event, expressing their creativity and spreading the message of a Drug-Free Society through their artwork. Participation certificates were presented to all participants as a token of appreciation.
On 24.06.2026, an Essay Writing Competition-cum-Anti-Drug Awareness Programme was organized at SAI Hostel, Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram, with the participation of approximately 47 hostel inmates, coaches and staff members. The programme focused on the harmful effects of drug abuse, provisions of the NDPS Act, healthy lifestyle choices and the importance of youth participation in preventing drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
On 26 June 2026, in a dynamic show of solidarity and commitment, the Andaman & Nicobar Police organized a Motorcycle Awareness Rally as part of the week’s observance. The rally was flagged off by Smti. Geeta Rani Verma, IPS, Inspector General of Police, A&N Islands, and witnessed enthusiastic participation by police personnel from various units, youth volunteers and members of the public. Approximately 205 riders participated in the rally, carrying anti-drug messages through prominent locations of Sri Vijaya Puram, drawing public attention and reinforcing the importance of collective action against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The entire campaign was conducted under the overall supervision of Shri Jitendra Kumar Meena, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID), A&N Islands, and Smti. Suma Madda, DANIPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotics). The campaign reflects the unwavering commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Police towards strengthening public awareness, encouraging community participation and adopting a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the Islands.
