DC Nicobar Undertakes Official Visit to Chowra and Teressa Islands

Car Nicobar, June 25: The Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, Shri Amit Kale, IAS, undertook an official visit to Chowra and Teressa Islands as part of the Administration’s continuous efforts to monitor development works and improve public service delivery in these Islands.

During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner held review meetings with the Tribal Councils and Village Headmen along with officials of both Chowra and Teressa. The interactions focused on addressing local issues, identifying developmental needs, and strengthening coordination among Departments to expedite ongoing and upcoming projects.

In Chowra, Shri Kale inspected key facilities including the R.O. Plant, local school, Health & Wellness Centre, jetty area, water supply systems, and the road network. He issued strict directions to ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance at the Health & Wellness Centre. He also instructed BSNL officials to ensure that the VSAT facility remains functional at all times, to maintain uninterrupted communication services on the Island.

Continuing to Teressa Island, the Deputy Commissioner visited the villages of Alurong, Luxi, Chukmachi, and Kalaasi. He interacted with residents to understand their concerns and reviewed the progress of Government schemes. He inspected the road planned under the PMGSY scheme, Schools, Anganwadi Centre and Primary Health Centre.

Taking stock of infrastructure gaps, Shri Kale directed the concerned Departments to initiate necessary improvements in road connectivity under PMGSY, with work to commence post-monsoon by November 2025. Additionally, he stressed the importance of accelerating pond construction projects in Chowra to enhance water storage and management.

Reaffirming the Administration’s commitment, Shri Kale assured the Tribal Councils that the projects approved in the recent District Planning Committee (DPC) meeting will be implemented diligently, with regular monitoring to ensure timely completion.

The visit highlights the Nicobar District Administration’s dedication to inclusive development, equitable access to services, and sustained focus on improving the quality of life for residents in remote tribal Islands.
