Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 5: The Government of India has launched a new scheme under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme to make quality veterinary medicines easily available and affordable for livestock owners, especially in rural and remote areas. Named Pashu Aushadhi Vikray Kendras, these medicine stores will sell generic veterinary drugs supplied exclusively by the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI). The initiative aims to cut treatment costs for farmers while improving animal healthcare across the country.
Registered Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PM-KSKs) and cooperative societies can open these Kendras. Applicants need at least 120 square feet of space (owned or rented), a registered pharmacist holding a B. Pharma or D. Pharma degree, and a valid drug sale licence from the State Drug Control Authority. Only one Kendra will be permitted per revenue block, with preference given to areas that have large livestock populations.
Operators will receive a 20% margin on the selling price (excluding tax) of each medicine. A one-time incentive of Rs 1.5 lakh is available for centres opened in aspirational districts, hilly areas, islands and the northeastern states. In addition, a monthly incentive of up to ₹20,000 will be provided based on stock maintained and sales volume.
Only PMBI-supplied medicines can be sold, and all billing must be done through the official Point-of-Sale system. Ethno-veterinary products and certified animal feeds are also permitted.
The scheme is jointly implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the Ministry of Cooperation and PMBI. Applications must be submitted online at https://pashuaushadhi.dahd.gov.in/ along with a fee of ₹5,000 (waived for stores in aspirational areas).
