
Sri Vijaya Puram, April 27: The Andaman–Nicobar Chess Mahasangram 2.0 Open Chess Tournament 2026 concluded on a grand and electrifying note on the evening of 26.04.2026, at Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram. Organized jointly by the Department of Education, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, in collaboration with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), the tournament turned into one of the largest and most vibrant chess events ever held in the islands.
What made this edition truly spectacular was its unique open-ground setting under floodlights, creating a thrilling atmosphere for players and spectators alike over the two-day event held on April 25 and 26.
The tournament followed an 8-round Swiss system format, with a rapid time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move. A record-breaking participation of around 800 players marked the event, including 61 FIDE-rated players, significantly elevating the competitive standard of the tournament.
Demonstrating exceptional skill and consistency, Master J S Virat emerged as the undisputed champion, scoring a perfect 8 out of 8 points. Master Rushil Y secured the second position, while Master Shrestha Vijay D finished third, both scoring an impressive 7.5 points each.
In addition to the open category, the tournament also celebrated young and emerging talent across various age groups. Prizes were awarded to the top three performers in Under-07, Under-09, Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15 categories. Special awards were also presented to the best youngest boy and girl, best veteran player, and best woman player, recognizing excellence across diverse segments.
The closing ceremony was graced by Shri Hemant Kumar, IAS, Secretary (Finance), A&N Administration, who attended as the Chief Guest and presented prizes to the winners adding grandeur to the occasion.
The overwhelming participation and smooth conduct of the tournament highlight the growing popularity of chess in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The event not only provided a competitive platform for seasoned players but also inspired hundreds of young enthusiasts to take up the game more seriously.
The organizers, officials, and volunteers were lauded for their meticulous planning and successful execution of such a large-scale sporting event. Chess Mahasangram 2.0 has undoubtedly set a new benchmark for future tournaments in the region.
