MESSAGE

Coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Wildlife Week is celebrated from 2nd to 8th October to deepen public awareness about the vital role of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance and to foster a culture of respect, coexistence and compassion towards wildlife and its habitats.

Wildlife Week provides an important opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment towards the protection and conservation of wildlife and their habitats. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, endowed with exceptional biodiversity and unique terrestrial and marine ecosystems, constitute a globally significant natural heritage.

The theme of the 72nd Wildlife Week, 2026 “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife” highlights the vital interdependence between wildlife and healthy, interconnected habitats. Protecting our forests, mangroves, wetlands, coral reefs and coastal ecosystems is essential for maintaining ecological balance and preserving our rich biodiversity.

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration remains firmly committed to the conservation and sustainable management of these fragile ecosystems. However, the success of conservation efforts depends upon the active participation and collective responsibility of local communities, youth and all stakeholders.

On this occasion, I call upon everyone to become stewards of nature, respect and protect wildlife, and contribute towards preserving their habitats for future generations. Let us connect habitats, conserve biodiversity and create a sustainable future where wildlife continues to thrive.

Dr. Dinesh Sharma

Lieutenant Governor,

Andaman and Nicobar Islands
