Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 8: The Department of Tourism, A&N Islands, in association with Kalapani Phaag Mandali, successfully organized a cultural evening celebrating Phaag, a rare and vibrant folk musical tradition deeply rooted in the cultural history of the A&N Islands, at Marina Esplanade this evening.
Phaag is a traditional form of folk singing brought to the Islands prior to 1900 by early settlers and has since become an important expression of the islands’ composite cultural heritage. Closely associated with the festive period from Vasant Panchami to Holi (Phagun Mahina), Phaag songs are traditionally performed in groups and revolve around themes of seasonal change, devotion, social harmony, love, nature, and celebration of life.
Phaag resonated through village courtyards and open spaces, bringing communities together after sunset in a shared celebration of music and storytelling in olden days. The gentle yet powerful melodies, accompanied by rhythmic clapping and collective singing, offered a soothing and immersive experience that transported audiences to a simpler, more harmonious way of life—an experience that continues to enchant visitors seeking authentic cultural encounters beyond beaches and blue seas.
The event highlighted the significance of preserving such intangible cultural heritage, which is gradually fading with changing lifestyles and modernization. By presenting Phaag to both residents and tourists, the programme offered an authentic glimpse into the islands’ living cultural legacy while reaffirming the importance of safeguarding traditional art forms.
The cultural evening witnessed enthusiastic participation from the public and was widely appreciated for its efforts to revive and promote a traditional folk form that continues to echo the timeless traditions of the A &N Islands.
