Sri Vijaya Puram, June 18: Shri TSG Bhasker, Chairman, Campaign Committee- ANTCC, has urged the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration to take immediate and effective action to restore and complete the long-pending road works on National Highway-4 in Middle and North Andaman.
In a representation submitted to the Chief Secretary, Shri Bhasker expressed serious concern over the deplorable condition of NH-4 despite repeated assurances given by the NHIDCL that the road works would be completed by the end of June 2026.
Shri Bhasker pointed out that several stretches of the highway remain in an extremely poor and unsafe condition. While some portions between Baratang and Kadamtala and Bakultala and Rangat have seen partial completion, large sections of the highway continue to be riddled with potholes, damaged surfaces, and unfinished works. Particularly alarming is the condition of stretches between Parlobjig Gate No. 15 and Kaushalya Nagar, Rangat and Billiground, as well as Billiground to Mayabunder, where the roads have deteriorated to such an extent that safe travel has become nearly impossible.
He further alleged that even stretches which were previously completed and motorable, such as Billiground-Mayabunder and Mayabunder-Diglipur, have deteriorated rapidly due to poor quality workmanship, raising serious questions about the standards being maintained by the executing agencies.
Shri Bhasker also highlighted the complete absence of street lighting and other essential National Highway safety standards along NH-4, which has significantly increased risks for commuters, especially during night hours and adverse weather conditions.
“The condition of NH-4 has become a major public issue affecting thousands of residents of Middle and North Andaman every day. The people have suffered enough due to delays, poor quality work, and lack of accountability. Immediate intervention is necessary to ensure completion of all pending works and restoration of damaged stretches,” he stated.
Shri Bhasker warned that if the concerned authorities fail to take prompt and concrete action, the Congress Party and the affected public will be compelled to launch an indefinite agitation to safeguard the interests of the people of Middle and North Andaman.
He called upon the A&N Administration and NHIDCL to treat the matter with utmost urgency and ensure that NH-4 is restored to a safe and fully motorable condition without any further delay.
