ZSI Organizes One Day Seminar on World Ozone Day 2025

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 12: The one-day seminar as a part of celebration of World Ozone Day 2025 was inaugurated at ZSI by Shri. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Department of Environment & Forests, A & N Islands.  In commemorate the World Ozone Day 2025, a one-day seminar with the theme “From Science to Global Action” was held today.  Seventy-one students and teachers from different schools and colleges took part.  The seminar’s goals are to inspire students to showcase their knowledge, inventiveness, and presentation abilities; educate teachers and students about social and environmental issues; give insight into the mechanisms causing ozone depletion in the Earth’s atmosphere; share information on global trends in ozone depletion and recovery; and educate the public about easy steps they can take to lessen ozone-depleting substances.

In his inaugural address, PCCF reminded everyone that September 16th is World Ozone Day, which is celebrated every year to honour the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol, one of the most effective environmental agreements ever put into effect. The chief guest emphasised that preserving the ozone layer is equivalent to preserving life itself and urged everyone to embrace eco-friendly practices like conserving power, planting trees, using less dangerous items, and encouraging green lifestyles.

In his address, Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr. Anil Addepally, IFS, reiterated the Forest Department’s dedication to preserving the islands’ greenery and urged people to plant trees, recommending that each person plant a minimum of one tree in their mother’s honour, with departmental nurseries offering free seedlings. 

The ZSI, Additional Director, Dr. C. Sivaperuman, in his speech, highlighted the United Nations’ historic multilateral agreements to fight ozone depletion, the Vienna Convention (1985) and the Montreal Protocol (1987). The valedictory function was graced by Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, A & N Islands, as the chief guest, and Prof. (Dr.) P. V. Nagendra Sarma, Principal, Andaman Law College, A & N Islands, as the guest of honour.

In his speech, Dr. E.B. Chakurkar commended ZSI for establishing a standard for scientific events by carefully planning awareness campaigns like World Ozone Day and other environmental days. Professor (Dr.) P. V. Nagendra Sarma emphasised that India needs more scientists than any other profession since their commitment, intelligence, and hard work are essential to bolstering the country’s might. The certificates were given to the participants of the one-day seminar by the chief guest and the guest of honour.
