It is for information of all concerned that there shall be interruption in power supply from Rangat Bay to Baratang in Baratang feeder on 15th June, 2013 from 0700 hours to 1500 hours for carrying out urgent line shifting work at Bakultala area subject to weather condition.

Port Blair, June 13: The unemployed youth of these islands who have passed 8th standard and not completed 28 years of age as on 01.07.2013 can apply for 8 weeks training on Food Production (Catering) and 6 weeks training on Food & Beverage (Restaurant service) at National Institute of Tourism Hospitality Management (NITHM), Hyderabad. This training is on free of cost and stipend will be given to the trainees. The hostel facilities will be arranged by NITHM on nominal charges and the expenditure of Breakfast, Dinner and Hostel charges may be adjusted from the stipend.

This year onwards the transportation charge from Port Blair to Hyderabad and back will be reimbursed by the Directorate of Tourism to the candidates who successfully completed the course and their performance and attendance will be taken into consideration for sanction of reimbursement. Port Blair, June 13: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes arrived at Port Blair today on a four-day visit to the islands.

The programme of the committee includes meeting with SC/ST Employees Welfare Association of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd, (SCI), discussion with the management of SCI regarding representation of SCs & STs services, meeting with the Chief Secretary and other officials of A&N Administration of UT of A&N Islands regarding socio-economic conditions of SCs & STs in the UT, meeting with SC & ST Employees Welfare Association of India, India Overseas Bank (IOB), discussion with the management of the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) regarding representation of SCs & STs on services and credit facilities provided by the bank to them, meeting with SC/ST Employees Welfare Association of Syndicate Bank and discussion with the management of Syndicate Bank regarding representation of SCs & STs in service and credit facilities provided by the bank to them.

The committee on completion of visit will leave for mainland on 17.06.2013.

Port Blair, June 13: Consequent on onset of monsoon, the water level of Dhanikhari Dam has increased and the APWD has lifted the curtailment on supply of water. Normal water supply has been restored to PBMC. Water supply to the residents of the Municipal area is now being made on alternate days, said a communication from PBMC.

Port Blair Municipal Council has also expressed its gratitude to the general public of municipal area for their cooperation during the water curtailment period.

The Council has further announced that application for new tap connection which was discontinued due to curtailment of supply of water to the PBMC by APWD will now be issued. The general public can now collect application form for new water tap connection from the council with effect from 14th June, 2013 on production of required document, said the Chairman, Municipal Council today.

Port Blair, June 12: The Andaman & Nicobar Command was tasked to  retrieve the body of a Seaman from MV Nicobar who had fallen overboard at about 2000 hours on 10 Jun 13 at Haddo berth. At about 2100 hrs Port Defence Headquarters of the Naval Component monitored communication on MMB that a man had fallen overboard from MV Nicobar and immediately activated all concerned. The Navy activated resources from Naval Flotilla, Clearance Diving Unit and Central Medical and Inspection Room for the contingency. Indian Navy also mobilized naval tugs to move MV NICOBAR to anchorage to facilitate diving operations.

Diving operations commenced at 2230 hrs with the Police Diving team standing by in support.  After a concerted search in the Area for over an hour and half, the body was recovered at 2355 hrs and handed over to the A&N Police.

The jointness and synergy among the Andaman & Nicobar Command, A&N Police and the Port Management is indicative of high standards of preparedness is crucial and Civil Military liaison of this nature can be crucial in crises /contingencies such as disasters/accidents, said a communication from the Andaman & Nicobar Command.

Port Blair, June 13: The Blue Planet Odyssey is a round the world sailing event aimed at raising awareness of the global effects of climate change by calling at the most endangered islands in every ocean: San Blas in the Atlantic Ocean; Tuvalu, Tokelau, Tuamotus, Micronesia, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean; the Maldive and Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. This global event will also highlight the effects of climate change on the Arctic icecap, the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands, all of which lie on the Blue Planet Odyssey route.

Following the start in London on July 20, 2014, the Blue Planet Odyssey will have separate starts in every continent. The Odyssey will sail westabout around the world along the classic trade wind route via the Panama Canal and Torres Strait. At every stop at those endangered places, the sailors will take part in community projects, while participants with specialist skills will take part in local projects and carry out essential repair and maintenance work.

The event will reach out to children worldwide by way of a comprehensive educational programme. Local schools will be offered the opportunity to be twinned with schools in the country of origin of the participants.

As the route will pass through some of the least travelled parts of the oceans, arrangements are being made for oceanographic institutes and research centres to use this unique opportunity to receive environmental data gathered by participants.

The Blue Planet Odyssey is a project inspired by Jimmy Cornell, founder of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), the largest transocean event in the world. In the last 27 years Jimmy Cornell has run 20 translatlantic and five round the world events, among them the Hong Kong Challenge, Expo 98 round the world rally and Millennium Odyssey.

Blue Planet Odyssey will be arriving at Port Blair in April 2016. In A&N Islands, Andaman Chronicle is the media partner while Search, a local NGO working in the field of environment, ecology and aborigines will be a part of the event. The event in the islands will be liaised by Andaman Holidays Private Limited.

Port Blair, June 12: To encourage the spirit of adventure and watermanship amongst children, the Naval Component of Andaman & Nicobar Command organised a Summer Sailing Camp for children at the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC) at Haddo from 13th May to 5th Jun 13.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from 35 children of different age groups from various schools at Port Blair. Many of the children belonged to the Port Blair’s Yacht Club under the aegis of ANIIDCO.

A YAI accredited coach of the Indian Navy imparted quality training to the children on Enterprise, Laser, Optimist, Hobbie Cat and J-24 class of sailing boats in addition to Kayaking and Canoeing.

At the concluding function the Naval Component Commander, Commodore Jatinder Singh gave away certificates and prizes to the participants, which was held at the INWTC, in presence of the proud parents.

During the Closing Ceremony, water scooter & speed boat rides and telegames were also organised for the families of sailors / equivalent from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
