
Sri Vijaya Puram, April 17: The three-day Island Food Festival 2026 was inaugurated today at ITF Ground, Sri Vijaya Puram, ushering in a vibrant celebration that highlights the rich tapestry of Indian cuisines and cultures thriving in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The festival organised by the Department of Tourism, A&N Administration was inaugurated by Director (IP&T), Shri Vinayak Chamadia, IAS as the chief guest.
The Festival which is being held from 5 pm to 9 pm serves as a unique platform bringing together diverse communities of the islands, reflecting the true spirit of “unity in diversity” through food, tradition, and cultural expression. It underscores the role of the islands as a melting pot of cultures from across the country, where culinary traditions from different regions coexist and flourish.
Stalls put up by local vendors, Self Help Groups (SHGs), and cultural associations offered visitors an opportunity to savour authentic dishes from various parts of India. Cultural groups such as Kannada Sangh, Bhojpuri Samaj, Moplas, Ranchi Association, and Nicobari communities presented traditional cuisines, showcasing the depth and variety of India’s culinary heritage.
A vibrant lineup of cultural performances marked the opening day of the Island Food Festival. The evening commenced with artistic yoga presentations by SAI Yoga Trust, featuring performances by Aaradhya and Gopikasri Darshini, followed by an artistic pair yoga display by Afsheen and Amreen. This was followed by a graceful Garba dance performance by Anshika Hawladar and Anushkaa Roy, which captivated the audience with its traditional flair.
An awareness skit presented by A&N Police was staged conveying important social messages through an engaging performance. The Police also conducted a cultural programme adding to the evening’s attractions.
A chess competition is also being organized at the venue as part of the Festival.
The day’s events concluded with a musical performance by Allpha Musical leaving the audience entertained and applauding.
The Department of Tourism has invited people from all walks of life to take part in the remaining days of the festival, which will be held till April 19 and experience the unique blend of flavours and traditions that define the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
