Dudhline Farmer Turns Traditional Goat Rearing into Successful and Profitable Enterprise

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 4: A remarkable example of rural entrepreneurship and sustainable livestock farming has emerged from Dudhline, Shadipur Village, where Shri C. Elango, a 40-year-old progressive farmer, has transformed traditional goat rearing into a successful and profitable enterprise.

With over 15 years of experience in goat farming, Shri Elango, along with his wife, Smt. Sumitra Kumari, and his brother, Shri Pritesh Sharma, has built a well-managed goatry unit that stands as a model for aspiring farmers in the region. What began as a small-scale livelihood activity has now grown into a thriving venture with a current livestock strength of 96 goats, including 26 males and 70 females.

A significant factor contributing to his success has been the continuous support from the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), which has ensured timely veterinary care, treatment, and access to essential medicines. This institutional support has played a crucial role in maintaining the health, productivity, and overall performance of the livestock.

Adopting scientific breeding and management practices, Shri Elango has implemented measures such as castration of male goats to improve meat quality and to meet local market preferences. With goat meat being highly demanded in the islands, this practice has enhanced both product quality and profitability.

In addition to meat production, Shri Elango has also diversified into goat milk production. Recognized for its nutritional and medicinal value, goat milk is sold at approximately Rs.150 per litre, providing an additional and steady source of income.

Through dedication, strategic planning, and efficient farm management, Shri Elango has achieved an impressive annual turnover ranging between Rs. 6,00,000 and Rs. 7,00,000. His journey highlights the potential of livestock farming as a sustainable livelihood option and serves as an inspiration for farmers across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

This success story underscores the importance of family support, adoption of improved practices, and the role of government institutions in empowering farmers and promoting rural development.
