Sri Vijaya Puram, May 18: In a significant step towards sustainable development and strengthening police infrastructure in remote areas, the Andaman & Nicobar Police has successfully installed 5 KW hybrid solar power systems at four remote Police Out Posts (OPs) in Nicobar District – Sawai, Chowra, Makachua and Afra Bay.
Prior to the installation, these outposts faced severe challenges due to limited electricity availability. Personnel were heavily dependent on diesel generators, leading to restricted use of essential appliances such as lighting, fans, water pumps and communication equipment. The situation was particularly difficult during monsoon and peak summer seasons, adversely affecting operational efficiency and living conditions.
To address these longstanding infrastructure deficiencies, the Andaman & Nicobar Police, under the guidance of the Director General of Police, A&N Islands, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) India Foundation on 13th February, 2026, for the installation of hybrid solar power systems at the four identified outposts, under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
The solar panels were successfully installed in May 2026 and are now fully operational. The initiative has brought transformational change in the functioning of these outposts including uninterrupted power supply even during adverse weather conditions, reduced dependency on diesel generators and improved living and working conditions for personnel deployed at these outposts translating directly into enhanced operational readiness and responsiveness.
The solar power systems were formally inaugurated by Sh. Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands, on 18th May, 2026. The department extends its gratitude to officials of PwC India Foundation, Sh. Jaivir Singh, Vice Chairman PwC India Foundation and Sh. Viraj S Hooda for their valuable support in executing this project.
This milestone reflects the commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Police towards adopting eco-friendly solutions while ensuring efficient policing in geographically challenging regions.
