Sri Vijaya Puram, May 18: The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute is conducting the 2nd five-day Training Programme on “Maritime Security & Coastal Policing” from 18th to 22nd May 2026 for IPS Officers/Gazetted Officers representing various States, Union Territories, and allied agencies from across the country. Following the successful inaugural programme, the present edition has been redesigned by incorporating the valuable feedback and recommendations received from earlier participants, making it more practical, interactive, and outcome-oriented. The programme is structured to provide deeper insights into maritime security architecture, coastal surveillance, inter-agency coordination, and emerging maritime security challenges through expert sessions and field-based learning modules.
The training programme was inaugurated by Smti. Sindhu Pillai. A., IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in the presence of senior officers of Andaman & Nicobar Police and participating departments. Addressing the gathering, she welcomed all officers and participants from mainland India as well as from Andaman & Nicobar Islands and emphasized the growing importance of maritime security in the present security environment.
During her address, she highlighted that the programme has been organized under the vision and guidance of Shri Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, with the objective of strengthening the decision-making and operational capabilities of Gazetted Officers in the field of maritime security and coastal policing and appreciated Shri Uma Shankar, DANIPS, Principal, NSCBPTI, Sri Vijaya Puram, for taking the initiative to organize the programme and commended the dedicated efforts of the faculty members and staff in coordinating the event professionally.
The programme has brought together officers from Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, CISF, IRBn, Fisheries Department, Port Management Board and various wings of Andaman & Nicobar Police and Administration. The gathering provides a common platform for officers to deliberate on issues related to maritime security, exchange best practices and enhance inter-agency coordination.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, she stated that the islands form India’s first line of defence in the eastern maritime sector due to their proximity to major international shipping routes and vast maritime boundaries. She also underlined emerging maritime challenges such as illegal fishing, foreign poaching, smuggling, narcotics trafficking, arms transportation, infiltration and other transnational crimes, which require coordinated, technology-driven and intelligence-based responses.
Based on the experiences and valuable feedback received from participants of the previous training programme, the current programme has been designed to provide a more comprehensive and practical learning experience. It includes detailed sessions on maritime security concepts, coastal security architecture, maritime laws, surveillance systems, anti-poaching operations, operational roles of the Indian Coast Guard, and search and rescue mechanisms. The programme also incorporates field visits, live demonstrations of coastal patrolling and anti-poaching operation aimed at providing hands-on exposure and enhancing the operational preparedness of the participants.
