
Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 31: The Department of AH&VS, A&N Administration, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and Veterinary Hospital, Campbell Bay, conducted a two-day training program on ‘Scientific Rearing of Teressa Goat and Nicobari Pig Management’ on August 25 and 26, 2025, at Rajeev Nagar, Nicobari Community Hall, Great Nicobar. The initiative aimed to enhance livestock productivity and improve livelihood opportunities for tribal farmers in the Nicobar Islands.
The program was inaugurated by Shri Barnabas Manju, Chairman, Tribal Council, Great Nicobar, with active participation from Tribal Captains representing various parts of the Little Nicobar Island. Their engagement underscored the community’s commitment to adopting scientific livestock practices.
Technical sessions, led by Dr. Parag Deori and Dr. Manoj S. Gowda, with support from Veterinary Compounders viz. Ms. Magdaleen, Ms. N.K. Yashmeen Shabnam, and Shri Hamilton, covered key aspects of livestock farming. Topics included the scope of Teressa Goat farming, housing systems, breeding management, care of kids and piglets, feeding practices, record keeping, disease control, and the economic prospects of goat and pig rearing. The sessions emphasized practical techniques to improve productivity and sustainability.
This initiative reflects the AH&VS Department’s dedication to promoting scientific livestock rearing and supporting rural economies in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The active participation of tribal farmers highlights their enthusiasm for enhancing agricultural practices. The Department plans to continue such training programs to strengthen livestock management, aligning with the A&N Administration’s vision of fostering sustainable development and improving livelihoods in tribal communities.
