Three-Day Theatre Festival Concludes with a Play Titled ‘Babuji’

Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 15: The three day ‘Theatre Festival’ concluded with a play titled ‘Babuji’, staged at Dr. B.R Ambedkar Auditorium, SVPMC today which captivated a good gathering of people. The play ‘Babuji’, written by Mithileshwar, adapted for the stage by Shri Vibhanshu Vaibhav, and directed by Shri Rajesh Singh, was a poignant and socially reflective theatrical presentation that explores the emotional and moral landscape of a traditional Indian family.

The Directorate of Art & Culture, A&N Administration, in collaboration with National School of Drama organised the three-day theatre festival as part of the 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav – International Theatre Festival of India of the National School of Drama, (NSD), New Delhi. This prestigious three-day event brought world-class theatrical performances to the Islands.

The play ‘Babuji’ revolved around the life of an ageing patriarch—affectionately called Babuji—who represents the values of honesty, sacrifice, discipline, and quiet resilience. Having devoted his entire life to the upbringing and well-being of his family, Babuji finds himself gradually sidelined in a fast-changing world shaped by material aspirations and shifting priorities. Through layered dialogues and realistic situations, the play highlights how changing social structures often leave elders feeling irrelevant despite their lifelong sacrifices.

‘Babuji’ ultimately reminded the audience of the importance of empathy, gratitude, and preserving family values. It urges society to reflect on how elders are treated and calls for restoring dignity and emotional warmth within families.
