Renaming Seen as a Significant Step Towards Strengthening Professional Policing and Capacity Building in the Isles

Sri Vijaya Puram, March 12: In a significant step towards strengthening professional policing and capacity building in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Police Training School (PTS), Prothrapur formally renamed and inaugurated as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram today. The ceremony was held at the Conference Hall, Lok Niwas, Sri Vijaya Puram. The Institute was inaugurated by Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands and Vice-Chairman, Islands Development Agency.
The event was graced by Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, A&N Administration; Shri Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands; senior officers of the Administration and Police Department; and other distinguished guests.
The renaming of the institution after the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose reflects a tribute to his indomitable spirit, leadership, and commitment to national service. The Institute will serve as a premier Centre for professional Police Training in the Islands, nurturing a disciplined, modern, and service-oriented police force.
At present, the Institution provides basic training to newly recruited constables and technical personnel. With the upgradation of infrastructure and optimal utilisation of available resources within the Andaman & Nicobar Police, the Institute will now expand its mandate to include training for newly recruited Sub-Inspectors, promotional courses for personnel elevated to the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspectors.
Importantly, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute will also conduct practical and refresher training programmes for Officers of the DANIPS serving with the Andaman & Nicobar Police, as well as for probationers of the Indian Police Service undergoing field attachment in the Islands. This will place the institute among the leading Police Training Institutions in the country and significantly strengthen the professional capabilities of the force.
The Institute campus is equipped with modern training facilities including smart classrooms, computer and language laboratories, a well-stocked library, a modern gymnasium, a firing range, a firearm training simulator, expansive parade and sports grounds, and separate residential barracks for male and female trainees. These state-of-the-art facilities will enable advanced, technology-driven, and practical training aligned with contemporary policing requirements.
Over the years, the Police Training School has earned several accolades, including the prestigious Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Training and the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor’s Commendation Disc. Several trainers of the Institution have also been honoured with the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Training, reflecting the high standards of instruction and dedication of the training staff.
