Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 9: In a major boost to the “Inclusive Development” vision for the archipelago, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has officially accorded administrative approval and expenditure sanction of Rs. 4.19 crore for the comprehensive upgrade of the rural road connecting Champin Jetty to Tapong village in the Nancowry group of islands.
The 4.68 km stretch is a vital lifeline for the local tribal community, serving as the primary link between the remote inland settlements and the island’s maritime gateway. While the road was originally constructed in 2018, it has faced recurring challenges due to the region’s intense monsoon cycles, leading to severe waterlogging and seasonal deterioration that frequently hindered vehicular movement.
To ensure a permanent solution to these accessibility issues, the new project goes beyond simple resurfacing. The sanctioned works include:
•Construction of seven RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) culverts to manage natural water flow.
•Installation of 2,800 meters of dedicated side drains to prevent water stagnation.
•Engineering specifications designed to withstand the unique climatic challenges of the Nicobar district.
The upgrade fulfills a long-standing demand from the local Tribal Council and residents. Once completed, the project will provide smooth, reliable, and safe vehicular access for approximately 1,300 residents. This enhanced connectivity is expected to significantly improve the delivery of essential services, including healthcare and education, while facilitating the transport of local produce, thereby revitalizing the socio-economic landscape of this remote region.
“This sanction reflects the Administration’s unwavering commitment to bridging the infrastructure gap in our most remote islands,” said a senior official. “By investing in durable, climate-resilient roads, we are ensuring that the benefits of development reach every village, regardless of its distance from the capital.”
The project is slated to commence shortly under the supervision of the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), with a focus on timely completion to ensure the road is fully operational before the peak monsoon season.
