
Diglipur, May 8: ICAR–KVK, N & M Andaman conducted a Field Day on Oyster Mushroom Cultivation on 07/05/2026 at the KVK premises. The programme aimed at creating awareness among farmers and farmwomen on scientific oyster mushroom cultivation and sustainable crop residue management.
During the programme, Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS (Home Science) delivered detailed information on various aspects of oyster mushroom cultivation including substrate preparation, spawning, incubation, crop management, harvesting, hygiene maintenance, and marketing opportunities. He also highlighted the nutritional and economic importance of oyster mushroom cultivation as a suitable income-generating enterprise for rural households and women entrepreneurs in the islands.
Dr. Rakesh Dawar, SMS (Agronomy) was also present during the field day and interacted with the participants on crop residue management practices and sustainable agricultural approaches. He highlighted the use of agricultural wastes and crop residues for preparation of vermicompost and mushroom substrate, thereby promoting eco-friendly recycling of farm waste and integrated farming practices suitable for island conditions.
An awareness session on balanced use of fertilizers was also conducted during the event. Farmers’ queries related to mushroom production, nutrient management, and crop production were addressed during the interactive session.
The programme was conducted under the overall guidance of Jai Sunder, Director (Act.), ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram. Around 20 farmers and farmwomen participated actively, gaining knowledge for application in their fields.
