DDM Urges Boat Operators to Comply with Established Safety Guidelines Issued by NDMA

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 12: In view of the extensive reliance on sea transport across the A&N Islands, authorities have reiterated the critical importance of strict adherence to boat safety protocols for all boat operators and boat masters. With inter-island connectivity largely dependent on small boats, ferries, and mechanized vessels, ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority.

The Directorate of Disaster Management, in coordination with maritime and district authorities, has urged all operators to comply with established safety norms and guidelines issued by the National Disaster Management Authority. Operators have been advised to ensure that vessels are seaworthy, regularly maintained, and not overloaded beyond permissible capacity.

The Director (DM) have been requested to all Boat Operators and Boat Masters of A&N Islands to follow Do’s and Don’ts as recommended by National Disaster Management Authority, Govt. of India, New Delhi:

•Ensure the certificate of survey and license on-board when the boat is in use

•Do not allow any explosive and hazardous material on-board

•Ensure the crew is enough and sufficient to handle the passengers

•Do not allow over loading

•Ensure that right information is circulated on-board

•Do not allow any unauthorized alteration on boat

•Ensure that boat is equipped and crew is trained to handle fire and rescue passengers

•Do not allow unauthorized person to get on board

•Ensure that the boat is insured for third party risks

•Ensure the boat is clean and dry while operating

•Ensure proper communication mechanism exist before the boat starts operating

The A&N Administration has appealed to all concerned to treat safety as a shared responsibility and strictly follow the guidelines on Boat Safety to safeguard lives and livelihoods in the island territory.
