
Mayabunder, June 22: The 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 was celebrated across North & Middle Andaman District yesterday with enthusiastic public participation. The celebrations were organized by the District Administration, North & Middle Andaman, in collaboration with the District Health Society, North & Middle Andaman, Andaman & Nicobar State AYUSH Society, various line departments and local communities under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Yoga programmes were conducted simultaneously at 15 identified venues across the district, including Diglipur, Mayabunder and Rangat subdivisions. Similar Yoga sessions were also organized at the District Hospital, Community Health Centres (CHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), Sub-Centres, educational institutions, Police establishments, Indian Coast Guard units, District Court premises, Government offices and Panchayat-level institutions, witnessing enthusiastic participation from Government officials, students, healthcare workers and members of the general public across the district.
The district-level function was held at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Sports Complex, Mayabunder, and was inaugurated by Shri S. Krishna Chaitanya, Additional District Magistrate/Assistant Commissioner (HQ), Mayabunder, in the presence of Shri Bhabani Chakraborty, Tehsildar/Executive Magistrate, Mayabunder, Heads of Departments and other dignitaries.
A large number of participants, including members of the general public, Government officials, healthcare workers, students and youth, actively participated in the celebration and performed the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) under the guidance of trained Yoga instructors. The programme also featured demonstrations of various yoga asanas and breathing exercises, highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy ageing.
The enthusiastic participation of school children, youth and members of the community reflected the growing awareness and acceptance of yoga as a way of life. The observance reinforced the message of adopting yoga as a daily practice for achieving a healthier and balanced lifestyle.
A total of 1,962 participants took part in the celebrations across the district, making the event a grand success.
