Fire Safety Drill at Sitanagar School Emphasises Kitchen, Electrical Hazard Awareness

Diglipur, April 15: A fire safety mock drill was conducted at PM SHRI Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sitanagar, on Wednesday as part of Fire Safety Week being observed from April 14 to 20. The programme aimed at creating awareness among students and staff about preventing and handling fire emergencies, especially at home.

The demonstration was led by Anand Bawali, ASI from the Fire Services Department, Fire Station Diglipur. Explaining this year’s theme, “Fire Safety: A Collective Responsibility,” he gave a live and practical demonstration of how to deal with different types of fire hazards.

Students watched with keen interest as the team demonstrated safety measures for fires caused by wood, flammable liquids like petrol and diesel, cooking gas, metals and electrical equipment. The session became highly engaging as students eagerly gathered around the assembly ground, asking questions and observing each step with curiosity.

A major focus of the drill was on kitchen safety. The team explained how cooking gas leaks can lead to dangerous situations and advised students to remain alert at home. They were encouraged to spread awareness among their family members about safe handling of LPG cylinders and immediate steps to be taken in case of leakage or fire.

Importantly, the team stressed that water should never be used to extinguish fires caused by electrical appliances or flammable liquids like petrol and diesel, as it can worsen the situation and lead to serious hazards. Instead, appropriate methods such as using fire extinguishers, sand or cutting off the power supply were demonstrated.

The live demonstrations drew enthusiastic reactions from students, many of whom expressed excitement at learning practical techniques that could help save lives in emergencies.

Informing about emergency response, Anand Bawali said that the Fire Services should be immediately contacted on phone number 101 or 272333 in case of any fire incident.

Expressing gratitude to the Fire Services team, Principal Shri Balbir Singh urged students to act as safety ambassadors and spread awareness about fire prevention measures in their neighbourhoods.

Around 336 students and over 40 teaching and non-teaching staff members witnessed the live demonstration, making the programme both informative and impactful.
