Sri Vijaya Puram, June 16: The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on 17th June to raise awareness about the importance of protecting land resources and addressing the challenges posed by land degradation, desertification and drought. The observance encourages Governments, institutions and communities to adopt sustainable land-use practices for ensuring environmental security and the well-being of future generations.
The theme for the year 2026, “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”, emphasizes the vital role of rangelands and natural ecosystems in supporting biodiversity, regulating water cycles, sustaining livelihoods and strengthening resilience against climate change. Healthy landscapes are essential for food security, water conservation and ecological balance.
Land degradation and unsustainable use of natural resources can lead to loss of vegetation, soil erosion, reduced water availability, decline in biodiversity and increased vulnerability to climate-related disasters. Although the A&N Islands are blessed with rich forest cover and diverse ecosystems, it is the collective responsibility of every citizen to conserve and protect these invaluable natural resources.

– Protect mangroves, wetlands and other ecologically sensitive areas.
– Segregate waste at source and adopt environmentally responsible waste disposal practices.

– Do not ignore early signs of environmental degradation in your locality.
On this occasion, the Department of Environment & Forests appeals to all residents of the A&N Islands to adopt environmentally responsible practices and actively contribute towards the conservation of land, water and forest resources. Small individual actions when combined can make a significant difference in ensuring a greener, healthier and more resilient future. “Healthy Land, Healthy Future – Let Us Recognize, Respect and Restore Our Natural Resources”.
